It is a 10 digit number that the government uses to identify you or your company.

Everyone who submits a tax return needs a UTR number.

Every year, you'll need to do a tax return. If you plan on doing your tax return each year yourself then it makes sense to get your UTR Number yourself by registering with HMRC.

How to Find My UTR Number:
Short Answer: Look for a 10 digit number on any letters HMRC have sent you.

Longer Answer: HMRC should have been sent a UTR number when you:

How long does it take to get a UTR Number?
Short Answer: 10 days after you register
​
Longer Answer: If you complete the registration correctly and with no issues then it should take 10 days to receive your UTR Number.

For some people, it can be quicker to use an accountant to get your UTR Number as they know what they are doing and complete the process many times before and are less likely to make a mistake.

If you are applying from abroad it will take 21 days to get your UTR Number.
​

Is it OK to give out my UTR Number?
